Deep-fried wine cookies.
2-1/2 cups vegetable oil
2-1/2 cups red wine
2-1/2 cups water
12 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon cinnamon
additional oil for frying cookies
2 cups honey, heated
Warm wine over medium heat.
Remove from heat and add oil, flour, cloves, and cinnamon.
Stir in ½ cup of water. If batter is too dry, add rest of water 1 tablespoon at a time.
Knead until well combined.
Roll the dough into a log.
Slice off 2" pieces.
Imprint basket weave on top of each cookie (or use a fork).
Heat oil to 375F for deep frying.
Deep fry cookies, a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides.
Drain on paper towels.
Brush cookies with warm honey.
Let set.
