Guava Jam Bars

1-1/2 cup sifted flour
½ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon powdered cloves
½ cup vegetable shortening
2/2 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
¾ cup guava jam

Preheat oven to 375°F. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and spices. Cut in shortening as in making a pie crust. Add the flavoring to beaten egg and add to mixture. Pack ⅔ of the mixture in the bottom of a greased 8 inch or 9 inch shallow pan. Spread the guava jam over this evenly and cover with the remaining mixture. Bake 25 minutes. Cool in pan, cut in bars. Makes about 14 bars or squares.
