Sesame Seed Cakes are served at several Chinese holidays, most notable during the Chinese New Year celebration. During this holiday they are though to bring good luck. Celebrate the Chinese New Year!
type: refrigerator, formed makes: 2 dozen
1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder pinch of salt 1/4 pound vegetable shortening 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 tablespoon light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract black or white sesame seeds
Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together; set aside. Beat vegetable shortening, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg, corn syrup, and vanilla extract. Add flour and blend thoroughly to form a soft dough. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll dough into cherry size balls and roll in sesame seeds. Heat oil to 325-350F. Fry balls a few at a time until lightly browned. Drain on paper towels.
