Koulourakia
These are traditionally shaped in to small braids,
tiny coils, rings, s-curves, figure 8's, and half
moons.
type: refrigerator, formed
makes: 4 dozen
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup shortening
2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup toasted, ground walnuts
1/2 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon water
powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350F.
Lightly grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
Cream together butter and shortening.
Add sugar and beat until fluffily.
Add flour, baking powder, 1 egg , vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg,
milk, and ground walnuts.
Refrigerate 30 minutes.
On a lightly floured board roll tablespoon size pieces into
ropes.
Place on cookie sheets and shape into S's, 8's, etc.
Beat remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water.
Brush cookies with egg.
Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
Transfer to wire racks to cool.
Sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar.
