Cookies
Benne cookies
are a popular Southern cookie. African slaves
brought Benne seeds, known to most of us as
sesame seeds, to America.
This
recipe was modified August 12, 2001.

makes: 3 dozen
3/4 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup butter
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven
to 350F.
Toast sesame seeds by sauting them in a dry saucepan,
stirring constantly until golden brown.
Lightly grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
Cream the butter, sesame oil and sugar.
Add the egg and vanilla.
Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt.
Fold in the toasted sesame seeds.
Drop by the spoonful onto cookie sheets about 2-1/2 to 3"
apart. These will spread a lot while cooking.
Bake only 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
Let cool on cookie sheet 1 minute then transfer cookies
to wire racks to cool completely.
